Roald Dahl

The Writing Hut

Roald Dahl in writing hutIn the grounds of Gipsy House stood the place where Dahl went every day to do some writing, putting his sparky ideas down on paper. Dahl would sit in his moms old wing-back chair, his feet resting on an old case his legs covered with an old sleeping bag to keep them warm. He would sharpen six pencils put the special green coloured writing board that he custom made to suit, over the arms of the chair and then begin to put notes down on his favourite yellow lined paper.

Joseph in replica writing hutOn the table at the side stood lots of strange things including his own hip joint bone removed during a hip replacement operation; a large ball of silver paper wrappers started when he worked at Shell Oil; a whale bone and a photo of his three daughters. The hut is still left the same today all set up for Roald to continue his writing, just as if he’d just popped out for a bit.

A replica was set up at the museum can you spot the difference?
