Roald Dahl

What was he like?

The BFGRoald Dahl was a big GIANT of a man, towering above most people he met. He was just over 2 metres / 6ft 6inches tall. Even though he stooped as he got older. He really did look like a Big Friendly Giant. It may have been his height that made him clumsy, he was always knocking things over.

He wasn’t a snappy dresser. He loved to wear bright coloured trousers, often red, and sandals, and woolly cardigans which nearly always had holes in the elbows!!!

Strange But True!

The BFG wears Dahl’s shoes! When he wrote the book he said the BFG had big Wellingtons, but when Quentin Blake was doing the drawings he asked if he could change them as they looked boring. Roald sent him one of his massive Norwegian sandals in a parcel. Look at the picture - the Big Friendly Giant is wearing them!!!!
