Roald Dahl

America: the beginning

Shot down Over LibyaAfter being sent home an invalid Dahl was transferred, in 1942 to Washington D.C , as an air attaché. It was here he began his writing by accident. When one day C.S Forester came to talk to him about things he’d seen in the war. But had trouble taking notes so Dahl offered to seen him some notes on the action he experienced. It ended up being a story called "Shot Down Over Libya". Forester sent it to The Saturday Evening Post under Dahl’s name. They liked it so much they paid him 1,000 Dollars and asked him to do more. Other stories were published and now his writing career had started.

In 1943 Dahl wrote his first children’s book, The Gremlins. It was read by Eleanor Roosevelt to her grandchildren and because of this he got an invite to the White House more than once where he got to talk to President Franklin Roosevelt and this was exciting for him. The Gremlins was also adapted to a film script by Walt Disney but never came out properly but this was only the first and certainly not the last.
